This is an update to our 2022 article on the cost of hiring a San Francisco Bay Area private detective.  Since the landscape for private investigators in San Francisco has changed over the last 3 years, we felt it was a good time to provide some updates regarding this subject.

Retainers

Many private investigators require an upfront retainer before commencing work. The amount varies based on the estimated total hours and the nature of the investigation. For instance, if the hourly rate is $250 and the case is expected to take at least 10 hours, a retainer of $2,500 may be required. 

Additional Expenses

Be aware of potential extra costs that can accrue during an investigation:

• Travel Expenses: Charges for mileage, airfare, lodging, and meals if the investigation requires travel. 

• Specialized Equipment: Fees for the use of specialized equipment or technology, such as GPS trackers or surveillance devices.

• Court Appearances: Additional charges if the investigator is required to testify in court.​
